In early 1811 the french "army of Portugal" lead by Marshal André Masséna, withdraws from Portugal famished and exhausted. Masséna did not succeed to decisively beat the british-portuguese forces. The letters he writes to his wife and brothers in France are filled with bitterness about the abysmal political and military situation in Spain and Portugal.
